From the oppression of an arid South African diamond mine to the glitz and sophistication of Bond Street How to Steal a Diamond explored the motivation of the diamond thief, the politics of the diamond trade and the audience's fascination with getting away with the perfect crime.
Inspired by true heist stories the production centred on three students' elaborate plot to steal the world's most expensive diamond bracelet. This was juxtaposed with the stories of a glamorous mastermind jewel thief and two diamond miners toiling under an apartheid government. Their methods of theft as fascinating as their diverse life stories: the jewel thief using transformational acting and sleight-of-hand magic; the miners training a homing pigeon to fly the stolen rocks past the security guards and x-ray machines.
The production was the amalgamation of a series of works-in-progress staged the year before, drawing together elements of new writing, video, sleight-of-hand magic and transformational set design. We sought to tell deeply human stories that explored personal motivations, morals and aspirations.
Vox Motus' first touring production, How to Steal a Diamond premiered at the Tron Theatre and toured to five subsequent venues.
